The Max-Planck-Institut (MPI) Informatik is one of the world's leading research institutes in computer science. The group Graphics, Vision & Video headed by Christian Theobalt performs cutting edge research on fundamental algorithmic problems that lie on the boundary between computer vision and computer graphics. The group has pioneered many developments in 3D scene reconstruction and video processing, and respective papers were published in the top international venues for computer graphics and vision, including SIGGRAPH, EUROGRAPHICS, CVPR, ICCV and ECCV. The institute is embedded in a strong ecosystem of computer science research on the campus of Saarland University which also hosts the Max-Planck-Institute for Software Systems, the Department of Computer Science of Saarland University, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, the Intel Visual Computing Institute, the Cluster of Excellence Multi-modal Computing and Interaction, the Center for Bioinformatics, and the Center for IT Security, Privacy and Accountability (CISPA). In total, around 300 PhD students in computer science study and work in the different institutes on campus.
With more than 95 years of experience in entertainment innovation, Technicolor serves an international base of entertainment, software, and gaming customers. The company is a leading provider of production, postproduction, and distribution services to content creators (in particular major movie studios), network service providers and broadcasters. Technicolor is the world's largest film processor, the largest independent manufacturer and distributor of DVDs (including Blu-ray Disc) and a leading global supplier of set-top boxes and gateways. The company also operates an Intellectual Property and Licensing business unit managing more than 40,000 patents. With more than 300 researchers in five centers world-wide, Technicolor Research and Innovation contributes to developing cutting-edge technologies and intellectual property for the company in a wide range of domains including computer graphics for visual effects, video analysis for content management and enhancement or stereoscopic/multi-view technologies for 3D content production. Through its exploratory research program, Technicolor R&I keeps abreast of the scientific community and establishes fruitful collaborations with top academic researchers around the world.
The group Graphics, Vision and Video and the Computer Graphics Group at MPI are looking for PhD students (wiss. Mitarbeiter) in the areas of
Applicants should have a Master degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related field and show an outstanding academic record. We further expect research experience in one or several of the following fields: 3D computer vision, computer graphics, motion capture, machine learning, physics or applied mathematics. Candidates should have solid programming experience (C/C++) and be familar with the typical software tools used in the community (MATLAB, OpenGL etc.). Finally, we expect the candidates to be fluent in both written and spoken English.
A PhD at MPI Informatik means spending 3-4 exciting years in a highly inspiring international environment with some of the world's leading researchers in computer science. Full funding is provided - for the duration of your PhD you are employed as a researcher (wiss. Mitarbeiter) at MPI. In case you are interested, please submit your complete application package including a CV, a list of publications, transcripts, and the contacts of at least two references via Email or mail to the address below.
We encourage talented researchers who just completed their PhD and who are looking for postdoc positions in one of the above fields to get in touch with us. Candidates should have a PhD in computer science or a related field and have a high-quality publication record in one of the above fields. Please send your complete application package, including copies of degree certificates, transcripts, a CV, the contacts of at least two academic references, and, if available, a list of publicatins via mail or Email to the address below.

I fully encourage applications from talented students who are passionate about a career in research. However, I regularly receive very unspecific PhD applications and CVs which lack a focus and a clear motivation. Please note that I only consider candidates who motivate very thoroughly and convincingly why working with me in my field of research is what they would really like to do. In addition to that an applicant should have an outstanding academic record and should be fluent in both written and spoken English. I also expect research experience in a related field of work, preferably documented by respective high quality publications. Finally, at least one of the following two conditions has to be fulfilled: 1) I know the applicant personally; 2) the applicant obtains recommendations from respected authorities in Computer Vision and/or Graphics or related fields.
Applications which fail to fulfill these requirements will most likely remain unanswered.
